Lots of great stuff so far!  I can't believe no one has posted one of my favorites yet....the P38 Lightning!

Lovin this thread.  The "Two Tailed Devil" (sorry, can't remember the Deutche) is my all time favorite as well...

My Lord Ambios, the nickname "Fork-Tailed Devil", for our beloved P-38, comes out as "Der Gabelschwanz Teufel" in German...

Cheers!

The Dehavilland Mosquito was always a favorite of mine, especially after watching the movie "633 Squadron" as a kid...(Many of the flying scenes from that movie were copied for the combat scenes in the original 1977 Star Wars film)...cheers!!

Thanks for tweaking my memory, Amras, on the german nickname for the P38.  AND...the Mosquito was/is always one of my favorites as well!

I recall readin' somewheres that there be no flyable Mossies left and only a single specimen left rotting away somewheres in bonny UK. Theres some neat footage 'o Mossies droppin' bombs in the old "Dambusters" film.
My intentions are to commandeer a venue, sail to Tortuga, then pick, strum and otherwise play me weasily black guts out.

Morgan, I believe ye be right about the lack of flying Mosquitos.  Damn shame, that.

I still recall thinking how insane it was to go flying over enemy territory unarmed just to get pictures . . . until I read that if any German a/c lifted off to intercept them, the Mosquito pilots would just push the throttle forward and get the hell home!

Many UK aircraft from the WWII era are rotting literally.  The Mosquito was almost entirely made of plywood!  Wood does not survive 60+ years exposed to the elements well.

Suppose it's ok to mention I know of one flying example...in 1/12 scale.  I happen to have an all electric R/C version of it!   ;D
