Where to start?

I have almost no idea what sort of persona I want to create. Before I joined this site, I didn't know people even had them. I don't want it to restrict me to wearing one type of garb, and I want an excuse to carry my sword around. All ideas are welcome.

I would start with deciding if you want to be historically "accurate" (a real person, or someone who could have been real) or if you want to go fantasy (faerie, wizard and the like). Fantasy, you're wide open. Historical, I'd go to class and country next. Noble, peasant, gypsy, English, Irish, French....its a good jumping point and you can tweak from there.

Well here is a suggestion, take it for what it is worth.   Go to Wikipedia and look up "BRADEMANTE".  Read all of the links you find, there are quite a few.   Bottom line, while the character herself would be to far back in historical time, you could be a descendent, and with a little bit of time develop a rather accurate lineage.

I don't mind if the character isn't historically accurate, but I don't want to be elf/fae/etc. unless it's half-elf. I think I'll use either that or human.

Maybe you could get ideas from a fantasy series you've read that has human characters with interesting backgrounds? I think that's what I may be doing... I've been reading a lot of Terry Pratchett's Discworld series, and it's been really inspiring.

I think the best I've ever heard it said... was when Molden said it:

"Molden is me with the volume turned all the way up"

Well, I concur, because Adolfo is me with the volume turned all the way up.

Take who you are... what you're about... and amplify it.  Remember that this is a character... and make it a caricature of yourself.

There isn't any rule that says you have to have a character or that you must always dress a certain way. I am developing a persona (mid 16th century wealthy Florentine) for playing in the Society for Creative Anachronism but my time at the faire is all about having fun being whoever and whatever I feel like on any given day be it noblewoman, peasant, or Hollywood-esque pirate!

I'm not sure yet. I think I'll just wait and see what happens, as I add to my garb collection and such, since it's changed a lot as I sew more.

for me, because I love to write and create, part of the challenge is coming up with a suitably interesting character that doesn't come across as being "cookie cutter" or "two dimensional"

This is another reason it works best if you merely amplify yourself, for you are obviously neither of those things.

Yes, I have the same problem with the characters in my novels and stories, but at least I already have some practice creating characters.

I used to play on line rp games and was in a role play guild where we were requested to be in character.  So I have stories that I wrote about her and her history so  what I did was took the character that I had there and created the human version of her.  Right now since I havent made a H/A dress (though I cant wait to get started) I thought fantasy was the best to start with since that was what I knew.  I still need to properly introduce her here lol
