Rethymno Castle is located in Rethymno, Greece.

It was built in antiquity, known as ancient Rhithymna and Arsinoe. The fortifications you can see to day were built as a 16 century Venetian castle called the Fortezza, one of the best preserved castles in Crete.

Rayen Castle (Persian: Arg-e-Rayen) is an adobe castle in Kerman province, Iran.

Arg-e Rayen was inhabited until 150 years ago and, although believed to be at least 1,000 years old, may in fact have foundations from the pre-Islamic Sassanid era.

Sandal Castle is a ruin in Sandal, a suburb of the city of Wakefield in West Yorkshire, England.

The motte and bailey castle was the site of royal intrigue, the opening of one of William Shakespeare's plays, and was the source for a common children's nursery rhyme.

Château de Fère-en-Tardenois is in the Aisne department in Picardy in northern France.

The castle was founded in the 13th century by the Counts of Dreux. Today the more modern additions to the castle serve as a four star hotel under the shadow of the 13th century ruins.

Schloss Kopenick is a Baroque castle of the Hohenzollern electors of Brandenburg which stands on an island in the Dahme River and gives its name to Kopenick, a district of Berlin, Germany.

The castle was originally built in 1558 as a hunting lodge by order of Elector Joachim II Hector of Brandenburg. The building in a Renaissance style was located on the river island at the site of the former medieval fort. In 1677 the buildings were considerably enlarged.

Castillo de Alquézar is in the province of Huesca, in the autonomous community of Aragon, Spain.

Alquézar, the muslim castle was built in the ninth century by Ibn Khalaf Arad. In 893 Alquézar belonged to a man: Ban Qasi of Tudela.  His conquest was carried out in 1067 by Sancho Ramírez, who built the royal chapel of Santa Maria in the castle. For financial considerations, the king ceded the castle to the Abbot of Fanlo Banzo.

Frangokastello is the location of a castle and scattered settlement on the south coast of Crete, Greece.

The castle was built by the Venetians in 1371-74 as a garrison to impose order on the rebellious Sfakia region, to deter pirates, and to protect Venetian nobles and their properties. The Venetians named it the Castle of St. Nikitas after the nearby church.

Le toron des chevaliers is now only the remains of a 12th century Crusader fortress.

Saladin wrecked the fortress on his march to stop Richard the Lion-Heart from advancing into Jerusalem.
Latrun, as the area is now known, is a strategic hilltop in the Ayalon Valley in Israel overlooking the road to Jerusalem.

In 1187, the Templars fortified the castle. Of the Templar period, only the tower remains.

Dregely Castle is a 13th century hilltop castle in Nograd County, Hungary.

The small castle was probably built by the Bozok branch of the Hunt-Poznan family in the second half of the 13th century, during the Arpad dynasty, by order of Bela IV. It was first mentioned as Latin: Castrum Dragul in a charter of 1285 as the possession of Demeter of the Hunt-Poznan family.

Kolossi Castle is a stronghold a few kilometers outside the city of Limassol on the island of Cyprus.

The original castle was possibly built in 1210 by Frankish crusaders when the land of Kolossi was given by King Hugh III to the Knights of the Order of St John of Jerusalem (Hospitallers).

Golkonda Castle (or Golconda) Urdu, a ruined citadel of south-central India.

Golconda was first constructed during the reign of qutub shah emperor Mohammed Iqbal Ali and his son Mohammed Touseef Ali, begiining about 1364.

Ghal'eh Dokhtar, also known as The Maiden Castle, is a castle complex in present day Firouzabad, Fars, Iran.

This structure was built by Ardashir I in 209 A.D., and the name implies it was dedicated to the Goddess Anahita, to whom the term "Maiden" refers.

Kilwaughter Castle is in the hills about 3 miles S. W. of Larne, Ireland.

It's a ruin now but in its hey day was a magnificent building. The castle was probably rebuilt into its current configuration in the 17th century. Some evidence indicates the original was a much older tower house.

Rocca Calascio is a mountaintop castle in the Province of L'Aquila in Abruzzo, Italy.

The fortress was started in the tenth century as a single citadel watchtower; a walled courtyard with four cylindrical towers at the corners around a taller inner tower was added in the thirteenth century.
